Scalp Eczema Hair Loss
About
One of the side effects of scalp eczema is the temporary hair loss. When treated properly and at the right time this process is very likely to be reversible. However, seborrheic dermatitis does affect hair follicles so the exposal of the hair to the skin inflammation for a longer period of time will eventually lead to the permanent hair loss.
It cannot be easily determined if the hair loss is caused by the skin inflammation because the root of the problem can easily be the same as for the scalp eczema. For example, there are several factors that cause both of these conditions: bad scalp hygiene, hormonal imbalance, fungus infections, psychological stress etc.
Treatment
In most of the cases after reducing symptoms of eczema, hair loss will be stopped and hair will grow back. There are some steroid creams, mostly available just on prescription, that will help reverse process of the hair loss caused by seborrheic dermatitis. The effectiveness will however, mainly depend on how much are the hair follicles damaged by the scalp inflammation. If they are permanently damaged, the only solution for recovering will be the hair transplantation, which of course will have to be performed after the complete curing of all of the skin disorders.
Other Causes
A cause for the alopecia should be determined by the hair specialist, because there could be several factors that have influence on it.
The male-pattern and female-pattern hair loss is diagnosed to over then 90% of patients with hair loss problem. So far the only two approved medications are minoxidil and finasteride. Their effectiveness varies from person to person. This type of alopecia is not reversible, so, at the moment the only solution is the hair transplantation.
Other known possible causes for the hair loss are: iron deficiency, side effects form heavy medications, stress, eating disorders, pulling force applied on the hair…
The treatment highly depends on the cause of the hair loss, but unfortunately there are only few alopecia that are reversible, however further hair loss can be stopped in most of the cases.
